My friend and I used to explore
tracts of urban wilderness while walking our dogs around Melbourne.
A ubiquitous feature of the urban landscape
in which we walked were abandoned home-made bongs and we were so
charmed by their variety and character that we picked up and kept
many of those we saw.
Bongs and pipes like the ones we collected can be found in playgrounds
and parking lots in all large Australian cities. They are typically
made from an evacuated plastic fruit-juice container and a length
of garden hose - economical and disposable smoking devices improvised
by young people for their drug-taking pleasures.
We had originally thought that the bongs should be professionally
photographed and reproduced in the form of a hardcover, coffee-table
kind of book but this took a long time to realise. In the meantime
I began modelling and rendering some of them using 3-D software. |
